Jodeane Brownlee Recap

Last week we had a guest speaker named Jodeane Brownlee. Brownlee is a faculty advisor that works with the campus radio station, MavRadio. When Brownlee was young she would often have to walk beans and corn for work but at the age of 16 that all changed when she got her first job in radio. She worked over nights and weekends in Sioux City, Iowa. She earned her Bachelors degree at Morningside College. When she graduated she was offered a job as a TV reporter but then went back into radio after she was offered a better job. Brownlee loves Sioux City but came to Omaha and fell in love with teaching.

Brownlee says that all MavRadio is about is getting kids experience. She wants the kids to have fun and enjoy their time. She says that anyone can join, it doesn’t really matter what you are into. Matt Barros, the general manager of the radio station came a long too. He said that MavRadio is all about getting experience and it’s a place where students can come and express themselves.

Brownlee says that the station is currently looking to change their sound. She says that they play a lot of heavy rock music a long with some older rock and that is not what they want. MavRadio is attempting to roll into the new year with a whole new sound. She handed out business cards that showed exactly how to listen to MavRadio where ever you are.

MavRadio also strives to give people the opportunity to call sports. MavRadio has come of the best play-by-play and color commentators in the state. Sports at this point in time really drives MavRadio. MavRadio has won several awards and doesn’t plan to stop shelling out talent anytime soon.

Opening Weekend for Mens Basketball

Abler: It was opening weekend for the Men’s Basketball team and the Mavs opened up against UC Santa Barbra on Friday night and then played Saint Mary’s college Sunday evening. The Mavs lost Friday night to a lay up with three seconds left on the clock. Zack Pirog, a freshman, said that its awesome to play in the new arena, despite the opening loss.

Pirog: “A lot like TD said, him coming from junior college, I’m coming from high school its the same thing. Getting used to the pace, getting used to all the people, getting used to the stadium, playing under the lights. Its a lot different than playing in a high school gym, but I love it here.”

Abler: The Mavs came out swinging in the second game. Again, Zack Pirog was the guy late in the game scoring 12 points, eight rebounds and two block shots. Zack says that this team is still trying to figure out their path but they are going to be good nonetheless.

Pirog: “It was great, I had a lot of fun. I mean I got to play a few minutes in the UC Santa Barbra game but definitely tonight, it showed something. It showed what the future holds for Omaha and we are going to be good this year as well. We’re going to be great this year, I feel like.

Friday’s score was 59-60 to UC Santa Barbra.Sunday’s score was 104-58 to the Mavericks. For the UNO school of communication, I’m Alex Abler.

Mavradio Sports Experience

MavRadio is UNO’s college radio station, they mostly play hard rock music but they are on a mission to change their sound. But, MavRadio does more than music. General Manager Matt Barrows says right now sports in on the forefront for MavRadio.

Barros: “Sports is, right now, much to my dismay, sports is the most important thing to MavRadio.”

MavRadio calls almost all UNO sporting events. The goal at MavRadio is really to get people involved.

Barros: “We had a freshman come to us this year who saw us at the involvement fair and basically came to me and asked me, “What can I do to get involved?” and it was that easy.”

If anyone is looking to go into sports and they need experience. Matt Barros says that the radio station can give them that experience.

Barros: “What always seems to hold people back, you hear stories, well you don’t have enough experience. Well how the heck are you supposed to get experience if for every job you’re supposed to have experience? Nobody ever gives you experience, well here you get live, real world experience right here at MavRadio before you even step foot out there to try and apply for a job.”

Hardware

The story determines the type of media used in journalism. Cameras that can be used can vary between high quality and low quality. Not all of the time, but some of the time, your phones will be fine to take pictures in a snap. They use wide angle lenses though, so don’t expect to be zooming in too much. Shutter speed controls the amount of light that the camera takes into the lens. This function is key when shooting outside or low light areas. Aperture is the hole in the middl of the lens that lets the light in. This is definitely key to taking awesome pictures in light that is less than favorable.

Your phone has two microphones in it, which is awesome. When shooting video you must remember the rule of thirds. The rule of this leads to a much m0re interesting piece and video. The rule of thirds is basically when you shoot a picture it breaks it the picture or video down into thirds which allows the person controlling the picture to have better angles and shots. Never have anyone look directly into the camera when doing a shot, this a lot of the time breaks the forth wall.

Background noise is always something that needs to be taken care of. Find a good quiet spot for interviews that works for you and your interviewee. It is always key for the producer of the piece to get nat sound or ambient sound. A good example of ambient sound is when you watch watch football and they start the broadcast with crowd noise from the stadium. B-roll and nat sound really help a journalist and broadcaster to set the scene for their audience. It is key to make the show, piece or broadcast great.

Volleyball Senior Day

It was senior day for six Maverick seniors when the played Western Illinois on Sunday afternoon. The six seniors leaving the Mavericks are: Kim Bailey, Megan Schmale, Kelley Wollak, Diane Bandaras, Amy Taylor and Meagen Roth. The Mavericks wend down 4-1 in the first set but quickly came back to win 25-16. The Mavs didn’t lift their foot off the peddle as the cruised to a sweep of Western 3-0. Before the game began many parents started to show up in their special made senior day shirts. Tears of sadness and joy were all around as many of these lady Mavs were about to see their careers at UNO end. The sweep extended the Mavericks win streak to five games, which is the longest for the Mavericks since 2010. Omaha will be returning to action at the Sapp Fieldhouse next Friday, November 6th. The Mavericks look to close out their solid season with a win against South Dakota State.
